Many outside the entertainment industry believe that a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is both automatic and free. Unfortunately, this is not the reality. In fact, the total cost was $55,000. We will be very grateful for any contributions you made, whether large or small, toward Juanita's star. Moving forward, we plan to celebrate other Black pioneers.
In addition to honoring her for a large body of work in films and on TV -- IMDb.com lists over 100 acting credits from 1933-2001 -- the Walk of Fame also establishes her among early Black performers whose contributions to Hollywood took place under extremely difficult circumstances.
Juanita is best remembered for her performance in Imitation of Life in 1959, for which she received a Best Supporting Actress nomination, the fifth Black actor to be nominated for an Academy Award.
Pioneers like Juanita Moore, Paul Robeson, Hattie McDaniel, Sidney Poitier, Dorothy Dandridge, and so very many others, helped to open the doors of Hollywood for younger generations of African American performers. A star on the Walk of Fame commemorates that struggle even as it celebrates the individual whose name it bears.
